Where I Traveled This Summer as a Luxury Travel Advisor

Dispatches from the road – summer 2025 edition

As summer draws to a close, and while we’re already deep into designing 2026 adventures for clients, I like to pause and reflect on my own journeys. Each year, when our kids head off to camp, I embrace a quiet window to recharge, research, and seek inspiration. And yes, sometimes that looks like spa robes and rosé.

This summer was all about discovery, flexibility, and a reminder of why I love helping travelers curate meaningful experiences. From Portugal to Provence to Switzerland, here’s a peek at the luxury travel destinations that shaped my summer – and a few insider takeaways for your own future travels.

Stop 1: Portugal – From Comporta to the Douro Valley

Portugal remains one of my favorite European summer destinations. I began in Comporta with one of my dearest friends, where rustic-chic is the vibe: long sandy beaches, mornings on the tennis court and golf course, and long fresh fish and chilled wine lunches. From there, we drove north to the Douro Valley, wine-country bliss with rolling vineyards and river views – this region never fails to charm me. Our days were spent wine tasting, enjoying the spa, and simply soaking in the pace of life before wrapping up in Lisbon for shopping, people-watching, and, of course, pastéis de nata.

Hotels I Loved: Sublime Comporta, Six Senses Douro Valley, Palacio Ludovice

Portugal Travel Advisor Tips:

  • A boat day on the Douro is a must.
  • Self-driving outside Lisbon is easy and scenic.
  • Portuguese hospitality is among the warmest you’ll find.
  • Douro Rosé is incredible (it rivals Provencal!) as is White Porto.
  • Plan to dine late for the best vibe — lunch at 2 pm, dinner after 8:30 pm.

Stop 2: Provence – A Serendipitous Pivot

After saying goodbye to my friend, I flew to the South of France to meet my husband – but travel isn’t always perfect. Our Corsica flight was canceled, and with time short and our fair share of travel curveballs, we pivoted to Cassis. It turned out to be a gift. We found space at a stunning resort that I’ve been recommending to clients for years. Pool days, hikes through the Calanques, playing (more) tennis, sipping rosé in Bandol (a bucket-list wine region for me!), and enjoying an authentically French summer vacation — we saw very few Americans during our stay.

We then continued to the Luberon Valley – part of our original plan – and based ourselves just outside Bonnieux. We spent three days wandering through charming villages, among my favorites were Menerbes, Lourmarin, Roussillon, and Bonnieux itself. This was a shorter visit than I would have liked, so we’ve already promised ourselves we’ll return, ideally in early summer, to catch the lavender in bloom.

Hotels I Loved: Le Piggonet, Les Roches Blanches, Capelongue

Provence Travel Advisor Tips:

  • Visit in late spring or early fall for the best weather.
  • Time your village visits with open-air market days.
  • Stock up at the French pharmacy (A313 retinol = gold).
  • Say yes to bread & cheese – guilt-free.
  • Buy travel insurance (lesson reinforced!)

Stop 3: Switzerland – Alpine Grandeur

After a few weeks back in the U.S., reuniting with the kids and getting them off to school, I set off again. This time Switzerland called, a country that continues to capture my heart. I started at The Chedi Andermatt, where Asian-inspired design meets Alpine luxury. Its location offers easy access to 180km of ski pistes and stunning alpine scenery.

Then I drove three hours through some of the most breathtaking mountain roads I’ve ever experienced to St. Moritz for Leading Hotels of the World’s annual top producer’s conference. I stayed at the legendary Badrutt’s Palace, which instantly became a personal favorite. The next few days were all about connection and discovery – meeting hoteliers, learning about new openings and renovations, and scouting fresh experiences to bring to my clients.

Switzerland never fails to inspire – it’s a country where jaw-dropping landscapes meet world-class hospitality, seamlessly blending luxury with outdoor adventure. In summer, it’s all about alpine air, scenic hikes, and breathtaking train journeys; in winter, it transforms into a playground for skiers and snow-lovers alike. Whatever the season, Switzerland delivers year-round.

Hotels I Loved: The Chedi Andermatt, Badrutt’s Palace, Dolder Grand

Switzerland Travel Advisor Tips:

  • Incorporate at least one train journey — the scenery is part of the magic.
  • Don’t miss the Swiss wines – they are not exported outside the country and they are delicious.
  • Spa complexes are a thing here – pick a hotel with an excellent one.
  • Summer is just as magical as ski season.
  • Altitude can be a factor – research your location ahead of time and be prepared with extra hydration and self-care.
